Point/Counter-Point #1: Ultimates 3
Welcome to Point/Counter-Point, where I will be highlighting things that I think are wrong while contrasting my opinions with a positive counter-point. For my first edition, we will briefly touch on Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira’s Ultimates 3, published by Marvel Comics.
My problems with Ultimates 3 are too numerous to list so I shall neatly sum them up: Ultimates 3 was created so that Jeph Loeb & Joe Mad draw the Avengers and the editors at Marvel did not want them or could not give them the “real” Avengers. Everything that Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch built up in volume 1 and 2 of The Ultimates was trashed so that Jeph Loeb could have his way with the characters. Characters behaved like childish versions of themselves and plot holes the size of the ozone layer were just a few problems with the writing. This series was the beginning of the end of the Ultimate Universe in more than one way, as the damage to the characters and the Ultimate imprint was so great that an entire series has been dedicated to wiping the planet clean of evidence that the events of Ultimates 3 happened.
With all this said, the book did have its positive aspects. The artwork was fantastic and was clearly the main selling factor of the book. If Ultimates 3 had been released without any words, it would have been a lot less aggravating to read. In addition, Ultimates 3 saved me from the burden of ever wanting to buy another Ultimates title again.
